In Cleveland's bustling East Fourth Street entertainment district, Michael Symon's Lola bistro serves up some curious concoctions that are as tasty as they are buzz-generating. Specializing in contemporary American cuisine, the bistro itself is intimate without being stuffy with curved ceilings, rich wood accents and low lighting. While the atmosphere is quietly elegant, the food is anything but. Before your meal, try the beef cheek pierogi, a famous Symon dish consisting of earthy wild mushrooms and spicy horseradish crème fraîche, or briny chilled lobster with wasabi greens, yuzu, avocado and daikon. When it comes to entrées, frankly you can't go wrong. The walleye arrives in clambake-inspired broth (think corn, potatoes and, of course, clams) while the duck breast, served with green beans and scallions in "romesco" sauce, is rich and dense. The menu, which changes seasonally, often includes wild Alaskan salmon, lamb and a beef hanger steak prepared in various ways. The dessert menu is equally interesting. We suggest the "6 a.m. Special," sweet french toast with maple bacon ice cream and caramelized apples. Beyond the food, Lola has an extensive wine list with over 400 wines and approachable "wine managers" to help customers navigate the bottles.
