La Petite Grocery Description:
Formerly a flower shop, and before that a grocery, this charming space now houses one of Uptown's most virtuous kitchens. Impeccable ingredients are showcased in a polished but unpretentious manner on a seasonally updated menu. Good choices include the gratin of blue crab baked in Brie cream, braised pork shanks over stone-ground grits and smothered greens, and the "Louisiana bouillabaisse," although the latter rotates off the menu from time to time. Former sous chef Justin Devillier has taken over the kitchen, and added more French classics and a lighter touch. A renovation also lightened the décor of this historic space. La Petite today is one of the most exciting restaurants in the city. A wide-ranging wine list presents mostly French selections, and changes frequently. Look for a good line-up of by-the-glass choices.
