Casamento's Description:
It doesn't get much more old school than Casamento's, a vintage New Orleans seafood icon and oyster bar in business since1919. The restaurant's devoted regulars dote on its icy raw oysters, fried oysters cooked in small batches in cast iron skillets and a definitive New Orleans-style oyster stew with whole oysters bobbing in scalded milk. Another mainstay is the fried oyster loaf, a sandwich made on thick planks of white bread sliced horizontally from the loaf, slathered with butter and toasted. At peak season, a half-dozen raw oysters plus a half-dozen fried ones adds up to a heavenly lunch. Throw in a fried soft-shell crab, when available, and you have an unbeatable dinner. Enjoy the quirky servers and the seafood, but skip the soggy spaghetti. The walls gleam with white tile work and the narrow dining room is usually crammed full of guests. Casamento's takes a lengthy vacation in summer, closing from early June through August in deference to the ebb and flow of oyster season. One of the great local traditions is waiting outside the door on opening day each year.
