The Hungry I Description:
With a quarter of a century behind it, chef-owner Peter Ballarin's Hungry i remains one of Boston's most romantic spots, occupying a restored 1840's brownstone whose warren of three small dining rooms, outfitted with linens and polished antiques, is bathed in the light that flickers from fireplaces and candles alike. It also remains a source of unabashed Francophilia. While foodies may balk at the kitchen's overall lack of interest in experimentation, it still has something to offer traditionalists who revel all the rich hallmarks of haute cuisine: escargot and pâté, cream and savory pastry crusts. Take the signature venison au poivre---after being coated in crushed black peppercorns and flamed with Cognac, it's wrapped in a velvety blanket of red wine and sour cream. Still, the biggest treat may be your front-row seat for a show starring numerous couples mooning in celebration over bottles of vin. Too bad service has taken a downturn over the years---we've encountered more than one employee whose superciliousness evoked Gallic stereotypes.
