75 Chestnut Description:
Bistro atmosphere in a neighborhood setting. The restaurant has become more casual than when it first opened, with a streamlined menu.
Valet parking is available during evening hours. There is limited street parking at meters on Charles Street. Complimentary validated parking in the Boston Common Garage. The Charles/MGH stop on the Red line is about 5 blocks away.
This cushy, clubby hideaway on a cobblestoned Beacon Hill side street is a blue-blood standby. Nightly, regulars line the bar and fill a small dining room that's all about smart comfort with its caramel leather booths and amber glow. The menu's comfortable, too, falling somewhere between that of a bar-and-grill and that of a steakhouse (although prices remain reasonable across the board). Rather than taste bud-boggling creativity, you'll find basics strewn with nice little touches---roasted polenta wedges to soften the blow of five-alarm chili; a generous mix of sides to accompany grilled chops; toasted marshmallow ice cream rather than vanilla atop a bittersweet brownie. In keeping with the cuisine, the mostly American wine list is small and moderately priced, save for a somewhat incongruous selection of private-reserve reds. Still, you ask, why traipse to Beacon Hill to find the kind of fare you can find anywhere? Well, newcomers are shown the same friendliness the regulars enjoy; indeed, it's the hallmark of this well-run operation. During the holiday season in particular, it comes across as one of the cheeriest, coziest finds around. The soothing weekend jazz brunch eases the pain of a late night at the yacht club, too.
