South Congress Cafe Description:
Every town has one: the cool, almost-undiscovered spot where celebs and visiting VIPs convene, hoping to be noticed despite their disguises. In addition to the hype and the hip white banquettes, concrete floors and bright orange dangly lights, South Congress Café has some very fine---and surprisingly affordable---food. Portions are generous, so we like to split some dishes, such as the bulging crab enchilada finished with a mushroom cream sauce, or the five spice-crusted pork tenderloin. Have a hankering for Cajun fare? The warm bowl of gumbo is punched up with duck, oysters and piquant andouille sausage. Non-carnivores have many options, including the "very bleu" salad of crisp greens with mild Danish blue cheese and toasted pecans, or the vegetarian fajitas prepared with meaty portobello mushrooms. Brunch is a bonanza of hangover-curing delights, most notably the carrot cake french toast with cream-cheese pecan syrup.
