Spanish tapas is the main attraction. Mid-size with an extensive wine list, stylish-casual atmosphere. Cost is commensurate with cuisine and area. A little on the bustling side of casual.
In Spain, bars are a place to meet, greet, flirt and eat. The tapas---small, frequently salty dishes---are secondary to the social scene. Not so at Barcelona, where the menu of eclectic small plates can easily be mined for the makings of a notable meal. Entrée choices are limited, and some, such as the classic paella, require a protracted preparation time, so it is easy to gravitate toward the grazing menu, which features specialty cheeses and meats, Spanish oysters and nearly three dozen tapas from a simple roasted garlic bulb to a crispy tuna belly encrusted in pistachios. We particularly enjoy the gambas al ajillo, shrimp sautéed in a spicy garlic-sherry sauce that we keep as a bread dip after the shrimp are long gone. The warm herbed goat cheese with wild mushrooms is heavenly from bite one, but the chorizo sausage with sweet-and-sour figs in a balsamic-sherry glaze is more of an acquired taste. Servers are happy to help with wine pairings and will offer a taste if you're unsure. All of which isn't to say that Barcelona's isn't also a good date spot or a place to meet people, because it very much is.
