Blind Tiger Pub Description:
Legend holds that a blind tiger was kept in the back during Prohibition. But there was no tiger. As it was illegal to charge people to drink, "blind tiger" became a euphemism for illegal alcohol, and, in fact, is a synonym in some quarters for "speakeasy." The space is cut into several smallish rooms with a couple of bars. A winding maze of patios trails out the back like a swishing tail. Locals and the college crowd collide here regularly for shots, beers, much better-than-average bar food and regular live music. The food emphasis is on farm-to-table dining, yet in a casual style with table service at lunch but bartenders bringing out food at dinner. Thad Stuckey, the former sous chef who has taken over the kitchen, produces such brunch favorites as steak ranchero and baguette-style French toast with currant butter and vanilla molasses syrup. Stuckey cooks what's fresh at the local farmers market, and might offer such fare as tilapia over butter sauce, a bone-in veal chop, Thai dishes or crab cakes.
