Herbie's Description:
Herbie's website might leave a casual, first-time visitor wondering. It shows a photo of a large group sporting '70s hairstyles under an awning emblazoned with "Balaban's." But locals will recognize the name "Herbie's" immediately as a tribute to the original owner, Herbie Balaban, who opened his French-style café in the space in 1972. The retro-mod décor in the main dining space could almost have you believing you're in a time warp, but the menu is completely contemporary. The classic dishes that remain on the dining room menu, like beef Wellington, have been adapted by executive chef Aaron Teitelbaum (who co-owns Herbie's and Monarch, another St. Louis fine-dining destination). As satisfying as the French dishes are, we also recommend the good old American Balaburger. Among the fusion selections on the less-formal bistro side, try the fish tacos, which come with a creamy succotash. As at Monarch, the cocktail menu is innovative, and the wine list is solid. Herbie's private cigar club may fill up fast, thanks to the city's decision to go smoke-free.
