Liuzza's Lounge & Grill Description:
This frills-free eatery is so close to the Fair Grounds Race Course that one can almost hear the pounding of hooves on the turf while tackling a plate of nicely composed red beans and rice. That proximity helps explain its popular nickname of Liuzza's by the Track, which also differentiates the place from the unrelated Liuzza's Restaurant & Bar located less than a mile away. The food is familiar stuff from the casual Creole canon, but is done better than the norm and includes a few distinctive house specialties. Most prominent is the po' boy stuffed with New Orleans barbecue-style shrimp luxuriating in a butter and pepper sauce. Oyster po' boys get the addition of enough garlic to blow a safe; bread pudding satiates even the strongest sweets craving; and the seafood gumbo, for which shrimp and oysters are cooked to order, should be a requirement for every diner.
