Bourbon House Description:
Cavernous, comfortable and busy, busy, busy, Bourbon House is a must-stop restaurant on every trip to New Orleans. From sports bar to raw bar to private balcony upstairs, there's a different mood in each area of this large restaurant, the third from Brennan family scion Dickie Brennan. Bourbon House has a line on particularly good oysters, which are purchased from the local wholesaler P&J's, and shucked and served raw and cold at an ornate oyster bar. The plateau de fruits de mer is worth its pretty price. Seafood gumbos and crawfish bisque are other highlights on a menu packed with Creole standards. Don't be shy about forgoing the wine list for rare bourbons and bourbon cocktails, which are a major specialty here. The restaurant serves as the home base for the New Orleans Bourbon Society, after all, and prides itself on encouraging a finer appreciation for the distinctly American liquor. In the main dining area, beneath mirrored columns and lamps that float like blown-glass Christmas ornaments, you can watch the sometimes surreal, always entertaining ebb and flow of foot traffic on lower Bourbon Street.
