Dresden Restaurant Description:
Carl and Sara Ferraro opened The Dresden back in 1954. In 1981, in what turned out to be a propitious pairing, they hired lounge singers Marty and Elayne Roberts. With the rise of California cuisine and its inventive chefs, Continental fare fell out of favor and restaurants like The Dresden seemed to retain only the most devoted customers. In 1996, thanks to the premiere of "Swingers," a crop of young enthusiasts began clamoring for lounge and piano-bar music, and this spot in particular. Almost overnight, it became a cool hangout for a whole new generation. The menu continues to serve up old standards like shrimp cocktail, Caesar salad and French onion soup. Entrées are highlighted by fettuccine Alfredo, veal Marsala, chicken Cordon Bleu and other retro favorites. Regulars concentrate on the steaks and prime rib. The dining room, complete with its startling white booths, is separated from the lounge where red leather, crystal chandeliers and stiff Manhattans take you back a few decades.
