Café Rabelais Description:
In name, this bistro honors the sixteenth-century philosopher of food and wine; but it's also a tribute to strong family ties. Owners Laurence and Chris Paul are daughter and son-in-law of Houston's own reigning French royalty, veteran chef Georges Guy of Bistro Provence. Café Rabelais's interiors are warm and charming with a genuine European air, and there are both lingering and daily-changing menu selections scribbled on a chalkboard. For lunch, expect a lineup of special salads, sandwiches, soups and quiches. We recommend the salade exotique with mango, papaya and crab meat; or the merguez, a spicy lamb sausage sandwich with garlicky mayonnaise. At dinner, look for steak au poivre, a two-inch filet in a pepper cream sauce, as well as the tender rabbit confit. For a sweet finish, dive into the profiteroles---pastry balls filled with vanilla ice cream and topped with chocolate sauce and whipped cream. Do sample one of the French wines from the affordable list. And get here early, before the line spills out onto the sidewalk and becomes a virtual street party.
