Frontera Grill Description:
Frontera Grill and Topolobampo are owned by Rick and Deana Bayless. The restaurants share the location and the bar, but have separate menus and ambiance.
Reservations at Frontera are taken only for parties of 5-10. Cell phones, pipes and cigars are allowed in the bar only. The menu changes monthly, and features grilled and braised foods of Mexico.
This is one smooth ride across Mexico's culinary landscape, and it has become a mecca for food lovers in Chicago. The menu blossoms with diverse, beyond garden-variety Mexican dishes. Eating here, in fact, can be downright educational. Chef-owner Rick Bayless is big on sustainability and knows Mexican flavors and foods and how they should come together. Check out the innovative seafood bar; while the selections are ever-changing, you'll be lucky to encounter sashimi-grade Hawaiian Kona Kampachi garnished with sun-dried tomatoes, roasted Anaheim chili, sweet sherry vinegar and homemade cheese. Dishes we have recommended include tamales filled with red chile beef and smothered in spicy pulla chile sauce; grilled duck breast with prune mole; pollito a las brasas (a half-boned hen with charcoaled green onions); frijoles charros; tacos al carbon; and homemade peach ice cream. Be sure to ask for the monthly changing menu, which highlights hardwood-grilled dishes. There are first-rate margaritas and a selection of Mexican beers, too. The service is just fine, and the décor---with its whimsical Mexican artifacts---is colorful.
