Luck Cafe Description:
Long the site of a beloved French brasserie, 18 East Cota Street sat vacant for years before fashion designer turned restaurateur Gene Montesano threw his beret into the ring and opened Café Luck. Classy yet casual, the Niçoise-inspired restaurant has the same stylish edge that characterizes Montesano's other local eateries. Black-and-white photos of the Old Country line mustard-colored walls, and the handmade rattan chairs from Maison J. Gatti are what you might find at a bistro on the Côte d'Azur. Executive chef David Rosner, formerly of the New York brasserie Balthazar, avoids the pitfalls of haute cuisine, instead preparing gloriously simple French comfort food. Rich openers include baked sardines, foie gras du jour and garlicky escargots served on an olive oil-soaked cushion of fresh bread. Servers trot out well balanced niçoise salads and alluring platters of fruits de mer, claws and pearly shells beckoning the upscale diners who regularly pack the room. Shouted conversations are the norm on weekend nights, as sounds reverberate between hardwood floors and high ceilings. Poor acoustics, however, are a small price to pay for an otherwise memorable dining experience.
