Blue Fish Japanese Restaurant Description:
Part of the burgeoning restaurant scene on Montrose's Honolulu Avenue is Blue Fish, an uncharacteristically hip eatery. A floor-to-ceiling glass façade hides worn brick walls, modern blond wood appointments and a fountain behind the sushi bar (its soothing sounds are overwhelmed by a lively crowd). There are more than 50 sushi rolls offered, including many overly imaginative renditions that obscure the elegant simplicity of authentic Japanese cuisine. The sushi was recently disappointing, including less than pristine uni that slid off a decorative but ill-conceived layer of shiso leaf, and salmon that was inexcusably tough. These deficiencies are curious, since we have had some first-rate sushi at Blue Fish's sister restaurant, Tani, in Old Town Pasadena. The Montrose restaurant's popcorn lobster with avocado sauce sounds alluring, but many pieces are so tiny that the ratio of fried batter to actual crustacean is embarrassing. A variety of teriyaki and tempura dishes are available, too, and service is generally accommodating.
