Lawry's Restaurants carved its SideDoor gastropub from the tiny lobby, bar and the former Shakespeare room in its classic English Five Crowns restaurant. Part of chef Dennis Brask's success is due to his young and innovative corporate chef, Ryan Wilson, who formerly cooked at L.A.'s Tam O'Shanter, San Francisco's Quince and Napa Valley's La Toque. Look for a giant red key off Poppy Street and enter into a cozy room with wood-paneled walls, hardwood bench seating and plush sofas. Sit right down and order up either a picked-that-day wine flight, a frothy microbrew or a classic Five Crowns cocktail like the refreshing Pimm's Cup. Next, sample a good variety of international and California cheeses and charcuterie on a plate filled with gourmet accoutrements. The seasonal small plates menu may include bruschetta with wild nettle pesto, Soledad goat cheese and thin slices of blood orange. The scallops taste almost like dessert, thanks to creamy sunchoke purée, fresh vanilla and brown butter sauce. Other good choices are the more traditional pub food dishes like fish 'n' chips, chicken potpie, and a Prime rib sandwich au jus with spicy fresh horseradish. At meal's end, order a flight of dessert wines to share and enjoy with treats like warm figgy pudding.
