Five Crowns Description:
With The Arches gone from OC's dining scene, Five Crowns has the distinction of being the region's oldest restaurant. Owned by the Frank and Van De Camp clan of Lawry's fame, Five Crowns is still packed nightly after decades of serving up some of the best prime rib in town as well as steaks, seafood, chops and lamb. Longtime chef Dennis Brask has updated the menu to include seasonally fresh dishes such as free-form lobster ravioli swimming in a vanilla bean cream sauce. The charming dining areas inside feature old-world-style wood beams and cozy nooks in the main and upstairs rooms. Outside, there's a flower-filled garden patio. The wine list is first-rate, though the best bottles are found on the Captain's List, which must be specially requested. Sunday's all-you-can-drink Champagne brunch is quite reasonably priced. Five Crowns carved its SideDoor gastropub from the tiny lobby, bar and former Shakespeare private room. Here, guests can enjoy Five Crowns in a more casual way, which includes ordering up flights of wine and beers along with modern pub grub like international cheeses, charcuterie, seasonal small plates and fish 'n' chips. Beware: As in any good old English building, a resident ghost reportedly stirs up trouble on the second floor.
