Vertical Wine Bistro Description:
A venture of Hollywood producer Gale Anne Hurd, this handsome second-story wine bar-restaurant in Old Pasadena offers small, shareable plates. The extensive wine list features 400-plus labels from around the globe, including a rotating selection of more than 100 wines by the glass and numerous fun, interesting flights. Dishes include white corn, basil and red onion fritters with cured salmon and crème fraîche, mini-grilled cheese sandwiches with radicchio, walnuts and honey, and Serrano ham-wrapped, Gorgonzola-stuffed dates. Pulled pork arrives on a grilled polenta tartine with triple crème cheese and prunes, and a grilled skirt steak is offered with chimichurri sauce. Perhaps the best way to enjoy Vertical is to concentrate on the wines while nibbling from cheese and charcuterie plates. The bar is lively and the dining room, adjoining a floor-to-ceiling glass-ensconced wine cellar, is dressed up with a prominent fireplace and cozy booths illuminated by contemporary lighting fixtures.
