Pops Restaurant Description:
After years of whipping it up Latin-style at Bomboa, Felino Samson---also known as Pops---has finally taken the proprietary plunge, scoring the slightly subterranean, foyer-narrow South End space formerly containing Perdix. And boy, were his neighbors immediately glad he did. First of all, it's rather adorable, with a quirky look somewhere between grandmother's parlor and a chichi speakeasy: a cream-and-black color scheme meets paisley print, scrolling photo screens and a narrow bar running nearly the length of the exhibition kitchen; a back room hung with sweet antique chandeliers overlooks a garden. Second of all, the contemporary menu strikes that balance between creativity and comfort that so many attempt and so few attain. Not much is for the faint of taste bud: garlic-bread soup with chorizo, lobster-cod croquettes and a so-called Cobb salad that's nothing of the sort but packs a multi-faceted, Cobb-like punch are all super-flavorful and filling; sides like gnocchi with bacon and leek cream may as well be meals. Indeed, we're inclined to skip the entrées in favor of such stuff---though when we talk ourselves out of it, we get even more savor for our cents (the chicken fricassée in particular is a rare treat around here---for now; we suspect Samson's spearheading an imminent trend). Third: the prices, all under $20, are nearly unheard of for the neighborhood.
