Rosa Mexicano Restaurant Description:
At Rosa Mexicano, the signature appetizer is the guacamole prepared tableside in one of the traditional stone molcajetes. Like most of the starters, it's enough for two, but is pricey at $12. We like the queso fundido, bubbling and hot, and served with two very fine salsas (one a green habanero version and the other a quite smoky red). It, too, is plenty for two as an opener. Tacos, enchiladas and similar familiar fare are prepared with fine quality ingredients, and are good-value dining. Among more expensive main dish specialties, arrachera comes with rajas (green bell peppers) and tasty shrimp in a tomato broth, but the beef strips are tough and tasteless; very good black beans and Mexican-style rice accompany the dish. For dessert, go for the cheesecake with a center of traditional cajeta and chopped apples. Drinks are expensive here, with most margaritas and other specialty libations priced about the same as the fine house-made sangría (both red and white are offered) served in a two-glass small pitcher, making it the value choice. At lunch, most dishes are available (but not the cabrito) for a few dollars less than at dinner.
