Wynyard, Sask, Town, pop 1919 (2001c), 1954 (1996c), 2022 (1991c), 2079 (1986c), area 5.29 km2, inc 1911, is located 150 km N of Regina. The area was originally settled in 1905 by a group of ICELANDERS and the CPR selected the site as a divisional point in 1908. The province soon designated Wynyard as a judicial centre for the Touchwood Hills-Quill Lakes area. At present, the main industry, Plains Poultry Ltd, operates a poultry-eviscerating plant and hatchery in the town. The town also serves as an agricultural service centre for the area. TheQUILL LAKES, immediately N of Wynyard, cover an area of 230 square miles (611 square km). The Potash Corp of Saskatchewan has established a plant at Big Quill Lake near Wynyard to extract potassium sulphate from the water.
