Andy Brooks and his wife Jayme keep things hopping at their fun, stylish New American bistro in downtown Ventura. The cement floors and open-ductwork ceiling make it feel like a loft in the city, but the service is much friendlier than you'd find in downtown L.A. They'll create dinners around wine, beer, Scotch and even cigars (those dinners are held on the patio out front). Andy's seasonal food is comforting with unusual twists. He's not afraid to put game or foie gras on the menu. He relies heavily on locally caught seafood and produce from area farmers. The dessert list gets longer every year and there's even a cheese plate to help you savor the dessert wines. The best way to explore Brooks' food is through the three-course tasting menu (a steal at around $35) or the five-course tasting menu (usually $60) which can be paired with wine for $30 more, but does have to be served to the entire table.
