But you're not here for the décor; instead expect good honest cooking that champions good honest British ingredients. You get what you order: crab on toast, Arbroath smokie---a particular British favourite (haddock smoked over hardwood); Hereford beef with baked beetroot and horseradish salad. Pies with short-crust pastry topping, once broken into, reveal rich smells and tastes; quintessentially English fruits like gooseberries and rhubarb are used in season. Service can be rushed when the place is heaving, but you excuse the odd lapse in such a welcoming, genuine venue.
