Cheyne Walk Brasserie Description:
It's a familiar and successful story---a former Victorian pub is transformed into an upmarket, chic restaurant and salon bar upstairs where you should start with a drink, sampling the view over the river. The downstairs restaurant has a wooden floor, startlingly sky-blue leather banquettes running round the sides, crisp white linen and deep red leather chairs which all goes down a treat with the locals who mostly favour the place. The cooking, equally in tune with the times, emphasizes fresh, seasonal ingredients simply cooked at the open-grill kitchen which dominates the room. Provence and the Mediterranean provide the inspiration for dishes like salade Niçoise, roast rump of lamb and, of course, steaks and chips (though of a superior, and expensive, kind). Delightfully out of the way, the nearest underground station is about a 20-minute walk away. Set lunch Tues.-Fri. 2 courses £17, 3 courses £23; Sat.-Sun. 2 courses £27, 3 courses £33.
