Taber, Alta, Town, pop 7591 (2006c), 7671 (2001c), inc 1907. Taber is located 50 km east of Lethbridge. Taber was settled by MORMONS in the first decade of the 20th century, and the name is said to come from the first part of the word "tabernacle," although the first post office (1904) was called "Tabor," presumably after Mount Tabor, Palestine. The local economy at first depended upon beef cattle and wheat but, with the development of irrigation, the cultivation of sugar beets became important and a processing plant was built in the town. Taber is also well known for its "Taber Corn." Oil and natural gas developments are prevalent in the area and the town has become a service centre for this industry.
