The scene outshines the cuisine at g/r/a/n/d, a chic, sleek nightspot with a Manhattan vibe that is lounge first, restaurant second. While beautiful, boisterous Gen-Xers congregate around the first floor bar and on cozy couches in dark corners, diners are mostly relegated to the glass-railed balcony, on level with the DJ, who keeps the place pulsating until closing time on Fridays and Saturdays. It's a perfect vantage point for observing the crowds and the colorful, computer-controlled lighting effects that perpetually morph the mood. The menu of small and large plates has been revamped and diners can look to more than eye candy when seeking to satisfy the palate. The duck confit quesadillas---a Chinese meets French meets Mexican dish---is hopping with flavors from the East, West and South. For heartier fare, try the g/r/a/n/d burger with sharp cheddar and bacon. This is a great first date place: upscale, yet trendy and dynamic. If sparks fly, you can linger over a pot of chocolate fondue; if not, descend the illuminated steel staircase and lose yourself in the vibrant mix.
