This 21-and-over, local group of Mexican restaurants offers serious food in an intimate, sexy setting. Its menu stocked with reliable Mexican standards, Matador uses deluxe ingredients and features peppery spices---from smoky to scorching. Enjoy a savory plate of crispy nachos, a bowl of chunky chili or more sophisticated bacon-wrapped jalapeños stuffed with goat cheese. Seafood entrées may include a delightful mahi mahi and habanero prawns, but true fans head straight for the carne paired with sautéed corn and leeks as well as garlic mashers. Carnitas, a dish of chunky pork served in a sauce accented with cinnamon and orange, is a winner. Baby-back ribs also stand out. Save room for the decadent molten chocolate cake served with vanilla bean ice cream and a rum-caramel sauce. The dark bar area is a welcome place for a quick one after work; the tequila selection is tops. Otherwise, the dark booths and warm colors invite a more intimate evening.
