Volterra Description:
Named after a village in Italy's Tuscany region, this charming restaurant is perfect for a romantic rendezvous but equally welcoming for celebrating with friends. The spacious dining room, which opens onto a small terrace in summer, has an upbeat, sophisticated ambience. Enjoy a cocktail or house-made limoncello with mussels and chorizo in the cozy bar. Dinner selections under the helm of chef Don Curtiss are inventive and seasonal as well as classic Italian. Baskets of fresh bread served with olive oil and little dishes of fennel salt welcome and whet the palate. Starters can include bruschetta with mushroom-truffle purée and grilled artichokes, or salads pairing crisp garden greens, golden beets and toasted walnuts. Noteworthy entrées include braised lamb shanks with a rich gravy served over creamy polenta, and fork-tender wild boar with a light Gorgonzola sauce. Beef tenderloin layered with lardo is finished with herbs and a Chianti demi-glace. On a cold rainy night, pasta lovers will want the orecchiette with lamb ragù. Service is sometimes slow but always friendly and helpful, especially interpreting the extensive Italian wine list. For dessert, panna cotta with chestnut honey and a decadent flourless chocolate cake provide a sweet ending.
