La Carta de Oaxaca Description:
At this small storefront in Ballard, instead of Mexican kitsch there are black-and-white photographs of the places and people of Oaxaca. The Oaxacan cuisine is light and sophisticated, so don't expect heavy Tex-Mex style fare loaded with beans, rice and cheese. Start with freshly fried tortilla chips and guacamole and make sure to check out the salsa bar. Although La Carta serves familiar dishes, try its namesake Oaxacan cuisine for a real culinary adventure. The house special here is a must---try mole negro Oaxaqueno, which comes with pork or chicken doused in a richly spiced chocolate sauce served side-by-side with yellow rice and handmade tortillas. Chicken or pork mole is also bundled into banana leaf-wrapped tamales, perhaps some of the best in town. You can also satisfy your cravings with molotes, deep-fried miniature torpedoes filled with crumbled beef and potatoes. La Carta carries three single-village Del Maguey mezcals (the Oaxacan apéritif of choice) served in glazed ceramic shot glasses. The margarita is also first-rate, and the tiny bar at the back offers two dozen types of tequila. Ole!
