This Italian restaurant offers upscale cuisine in an elegant old-world setting. Its hospitable chef Walter Pisano has first-rate credentials; he was the former sous chef at Jean-Louis restaurant in Washington's Watergate Hotel. The cozy bar and jewel box dining room set with dark wood paneling are bathed in flattering amber light. Because Tulio smokes all its own meats according to European methods, the exhibition kitchen at one end of the room often showcases an entire prosciutti hanging from the ceiling beams. The classic menu offers a range of handmade pastas such as tender ravioli with smoked salmon, asparagus and lemon cream; linguine accented with local clams, preserved lemon, chili flakes and garlic breadcrumbs; and tender gnocchi robed in savory brown butter and sage. There are also risottos flavored with seasonal ingredients, plus soups such as cipollini and grilled radicchio simmered in a robust chicken broth. Main courses showcase roasted and grilled meats, fish or game. Entrées can range from branzino with caramelized fennel to a hefty prosciutto-stuffed veal chop. The wine list is studded with Italian gems, and desserts are always worth the splurge.
