Sazerac Description:
Beneath high ceilings hung with dizzy chandeliers, this grand space is giddy with light, color and whimsical design touches. When it's in full swing, with professionals of all ages in all kinds of outfits from suits to sweats rocking the place, a Mardi Gras atmosphere prevails. Dramatic lighting promotes a cocktail party vibe in the 50-seat bar area, while the dining room's hard edges are softened by touches of velvet and warm mahogany. An open kitchen, raised above the dining room along the back of the restaurant, displays headset-wearing cooks dodging the occasional leaping flames of the wood-fired grill. We can't resist the gumbo (when they have it), or sweet corn beignets with Cajun sauce Louis. We also recommend the skillet-roasted mussels with lime-coriander butter. And that's just for starters. Next we're liable to slide a fork into Cajun soft polenta escorted by an alder-plank smoked salmon or a hearty helping of jambalaya authentique. We love making a meal of what they call extra plates of the stuff you really like. Our favorite combo is the grilled house-made andouille sausage with wilted greens or Mardi Gras slaw. The party ambience guarantees you'll be in the mood for dessert, even as your belt tightens from the generous portions. Do it up right with a small pitcher of cream and gooey chocolate pudding cake.
