Considered one of Seattle's finest vegetarian restaurants, Carmelita will appeal to even the most steadfast meat lovers. Color, texture, art and theatrical lighting create a congenial neighborhood café that's romantic enough for date-night. The quiet wine bar in the rear appeals to both couples and singles. Imaginative, Mediterranean-inspired flavor pairings are menu highlights. We like to start by sharing a pizza, perhaps with a topping of wilted escarole, Fontina, pine nuts, and toasted bread crumbs layered on a chewy nine-inch round of herbed dough spread with a paste of roasted garlic and capers. Bruschetta here is the real thing---charred rustic bread drizzled with good olive oil and topped with something different every day. Move on to entrées such as parsnip gnocchi with vanilla butter or English pea agnolotti with asparagus. Like the rest of the menu, several desserts are vegan; you won't even miss the dairy in the chocolate espresso gâteau.
