The traditional, upscale steak restaurant gets a Northern California makeover at this stylish enclave from Bradley Ogden and Michael Dellar, matching first-rate meat preparations with artisanal, farm-fresh starters and sides. Soft booths fill the roomy space muted with ochre hues and natural woods; a long, glass sculpture of waving grass and hazy paintings of wheat fields pay artistic nods to the food's (mostly local) sources. Though the vibe is lulling and comfortable, the ambient pace is stepped up by the comings and goings of seamless servers, and an exhibition kitchen that provides an engaging center-point. Everything is worth mentioning: the buttermilk biscuits paired with big-flavored fruit compotes or meat- or nut-enhanced butters; seasonal soups---small meals in themselves---including a creamy Dungeness crab and Manila clam chowder; the innovative array of steak sauces. And oh yes, the steak---all properly prepared, aged USDA Prime cuts, including rib-eye of American Kobe. Fish- and seafood-lovers can choose from several savory preparations; even vegetarians have choices here. Don't forget dessert, or to choose from more than 300 wines on the user-friendly, all-American list. You are allowed to forget, however---and will---that you are on the fourth floor of a shopping mall.
