Chez Maman Description:
Just a few steps down from the wildly popular Chez Papa, is the ultra-petite Chez Maman. The narrow restaurant, aglow in tangerine and orange sherbet hues, has rebuilt within the skeleton of the diner it once was. A long counter provides most of the seating (there are two small tables near the window) and a busy kitchen heats up directly across from the counter. With a very San Francisco house-music sound track slinking down from the high ceiling and easygoing French being spoken all over the place, its easy to get lost watching the cooks composing the house version of Niçoise salad or grilling a croque monsieur sandwich to order. Maybe because of its diner roots, Chez Maman does an excellent hamburger topped with your choice of Roquefort, Brie or goat cheese. Sophisticated dishes, with sophisticated prices round out the menu. Try the mussels which arrive steaming marinière-style or the perfectly moist pan-seared sea bass.
