Chaya Brasserie Description:
Chaya's sleek look features light-toned wood, bamboo ceilings and dreamy leather booths in the main dining room, and a second, smaller room with a more sophisticated feel and a small sushi bar. Both look out on a spectacular view of the Bay Bridge. While a bounty of young (-ish) and moneyed line the bar for well-made martinis at the sushi happy hour (weeknights between 5:30 p.m. and 7 p.m.), you need not be young or moneyed to enjoy the flavors on the menu. French and Japanese foundations collide allowing French food to be served alongside Japanese food with plenty of co-mingling filling in the rest. For starters, we loved the duck salad and Boursin cheese galette with a snappy blood orange vinaigrette, and the ahi tuna tartare with sesame-chili-miso vinaigrette. The sautéed sea bass stuffed with uni, langoustine and spinach was inspired. If your grilled rib-eye steak is a bit tough, maybe you can nibble on some of the sparklingly fresh salmon or scallop nigiri your neighbor is enjoying. The heavy California wine list may not be the best fit for the Japanese side of the menu, so ask about choices, the servers were well informed.
