Mexico DF Description:
Polished Mexican cuisine and professional service mark this comfortable, atmospheric enclave on Steuart Street's restaurant row. The room's edgier elements---exposed brick, wooden beams and antique photographs projected into digital shadowboxes---are softened by colorful Mexican art plates; sweet, ovate tables; and an elegant rain shower of twinkling, dangling prisms over a dark wood communal table for 20. An exhibition kitchen offers ringside seats for six. Flavors are memorable, clean and portions are sizable, as with the ceviche---coin-size lumps of Dungeness crab, prawns and avocado served in a sundae-size tulip glass. Generous portions of guacamole come three ways; we recommend the dressed-up, refreshing tang of the mango version with chipotle. All components, from the tortillas to the salsas, are freshly handmade in-house, and when combined on a plate with dusky, slow-cooked carnitas, the results can be transporting. Organic and sustainable ingredients figure prominently, too. Flights of tequila help open up the palate, to say the least. Waiters serve as agave sommeliers (there is also a shortlist of wines and very good cocktails), and are so intimately acquainted with the food it's as though they cooked each dish themselves. Don't miss shortbread "wedding cookies" if they're on the dessert menu.
