Monsoon & Fine Cuisine-India Description:
One of our favorite ways to spend an evening is to dine at the Popat family's Bombay Exotic Cuisine of India before seeing an art-house film at Hillcrest's Landmark Theaters. Start off with an Indian beer and warm cinnamon-and-raisin-stuffed naan or the aloo paratha (a deep-fried whole-wheat bread filled with mashed potatoes). We also recommend chef Ashley Popat's specialty, malai kofta, a southern dish consisting of vegetarian meatballs in a creamy curry sauce with cinnamon and nutmeg; the aloo gobi, cauliflower and baby new potatoes in onion gravy sauce; and the lamb korma, tender meat cooked with creamy saffron sauce, almonds and raisins. Tandoori fans will like the mixed grill, a combination of tandoori chicken and fish, yogurt-sauced chicken tikka and a ground lamb kebab. Don't forget the aromatic rice dishes and complex chutneys (we prefer the tamarind to the mango), and the topnotch raita. Squeeze in dessert if you can: the rosewater-scented rice pudding hits the spot when the weather is chilly; in summer go for the light, fruity mango mousse.
