It's all about simple food done well here: a rich, cheesy onion soup, garlicky shrimp, steak frites---these are the types of basic bistro dishes that Jayne's Gastropub elevates above the norm. The cozy, dimly lit restaurant has a European ambience that makes you want to return again and again for a big plate of bangers and mash accompanied by a few pints at the bar. We also suggest the light, crisp sea bass fish 'n' chips with sugar snap peas and the big, juicy Niman Ranch burgers. Sautéed bitter greens balance the richness of the flat-iron steak frites, while saffron-scented Israeli couscous makes a nice companion to pecan-crusted tuna. The Old World wines are diverse and moderately priced; the beer list is nice, but could be longer. A fluffy folded pastry crostada holds nuggets of organic peaches and is served with caramel gelato, a cool bite of sweetness and fitting finale to a lovely evening.
