Cantina Mayahuel Description:
Tiny Cantina Mayahuel serves a mean taco. Are they authentic? No, but as long as you understand these versions are a different breed (more Californian, perhaps) you'll undoubtedly agree that they are very satisfying. Large chunks of spicy, marinated mahi mahi marry well with the crunch of cabbage, the silkiness of crema and the earthiness of corn tortillas. The lime-inflected Tasajo-style beef tacos are balanced with fiery hot salsa. Even the chipotle chicken tacos sing with the addition of tropical fruit salsa. Our problem with Cantina Mayahuel is with the rest of its small menu---sometimes agreeable (as in the Yucatan seafood stew) sometimes mystifying (what is one to do with a huge bowl of achiote-marinated pork?). Rice, beans or just about anything else would help lighten this meat-heavy entrée. Rather than risking the higher-priced specials, we recommend ordering the always reliable tacos with a couple of icy cervezas.
