Joao's A Tin Fish Bar & Eatery Description:
Part of the Tin Fish family, Joao means "John" in Portuguese, and owner Michael Alves has built a restaurant to pay homage to his grandfather "Joao" and his ancestors, along with the fascinating history of the Portuguese fishing community in San Diego. Black-and-white photos, many from the Portuguese Historical Society or donated by local families, grace the walls, telling the story of immigrants and the fishing industry, while flat screens showcase fishing videos in the bar area. Fresh fish is the order of the day, with classic clam chowder, hearty and chunky, and ceviche serving as fine starters. For lunch, fried cod tacos, swordfish burritos, or scallop sliders are winning choices. An oyster bar delivers a bevy of plump treasures from the sea. Dinner calls for espetada, grilled tenderloin skewers redolent of garlic and bay leaves, or traditional Madeira tuna steak, rubbed in a garlic, oregano and basil paste and grilled medium rare. Fish plates of mahi mahi, swordfish or tuna can be prepared Italian-style in marinara and garlic oil or Portuguese-style in a red onion, cilantro, parsley, vinegar and sugar-based sauce. Do not miss the malasadas, Portuguese dough that is fried and finished with sugar.
