This is the place to learn some history from a solid segment of middle-aged, middle-class St. Louisans at leisure, although there are signs that the next generation has discovered it, too. The front room displays a retro bar that's not utilized as much as it used to be, thanks to the restaurant's decision to go lunch-only a few years ago; evenings are dedicated to banquets. So if a secret midday yen for spaghetti and meatballs has resurfaced, this is the place to go. Cheese garlic bread, listed as an appetizer, is splendid, and dishes like chicken cacciatore, veal Marsala and the off-menu chicken livers and spaghetti are the sort of American-Italian classics prepared the same way they were a half-century ago. The service is crackerjack.
