After years of being just a neighborhood eatery, Charlie Gitto's is making a serious attempt to do more than the standard menu, and its wine list is coming along nicely, too. Gitto's has long been a sports celebrity hangout---after all, it's in the neighborhood where Yogi Berra and Joe Garagiola grew up. Old favorites like Veal Nunzio, topped with crab meat and a lemon-butter sauce, are available, but the menu also sports contemporary dishes like three-pepper seafood fettuccine. A strong connection to first-rate steaks is vital, and a good wine list, strong on brawny Italian varieties, makes the evening even more pleasant. Some of the waiters have been there since Garagiola was, well, broadcasting, if not playing.

My wife and I came to St. Louis knowing little about the city or its eateries. The concierge at the Ritz-Carlton, where we were staying, gave us a list of recommended restaurants. I always take a hotel's recommendation with a grain of salt, however, on this Sunday evening we had made no plans for dinner and just picked from the list we were given. What a fortuitous choice that was. From the moment we entered, we were treated with personal and attentive service. Our meals were spectacular; they were done to our individual requirements, were served hot and promptly, though never rushed. We would both recommend that anyone looking for delicious and authentic Italian cuisine, served in a pleasing and professional way, take the opportunity to eat at Charlie Gitto's on the Hill.
