Arcelia's Mexicana Restaurant Description:
Across the street from Lafayette Park and in a restaurant-happy neighborhood, Arcelia's greets diners with white-trimmed windows and a couple of murals that reference the Aztecs. The crowd is a noisy, well-mixed bag---expect to see blue-collar types, suits with their ties off knocking back long necks and multi-generational families. The hot sauce is nicely warming; the chips are usually crisp; margaritas satisfy the pre-dinner cocktail urge. Guacamole passes muster and chicken is the filling of choice for tacos and burritos, although there's a very fine pork tamale, too, and good sizzling fajitas with vegetables and beans. Posole and menudo both are available. (Mind you, this is the only place we've ever been offered menudo with or without hominy. We prefer with.) Chile verde does not burn but instead tingles just enough so that the charm of the meat and vegetables are not lost in the flames. If there is too much pepper, a wide range of Mexican beer is available to extinguish the fire. Dessert tends to be stodgy.
