Steak 'n Shake Description:
The 75-year-old chain out of Illinois is so different from other burger palaces that it deserves a niche of its own. The gleaming black-and-white tile persists, part of a color scheme that dates to the '30s, and it's still fun to pile into a booth or sit at the counter and watch the grill guy create magic with a spatula and a patty of ground steak. The variations aren't endless, but they cover the basics: butterburgers, triple-deckers, patty melts and shooters (sliders in local parlance). Chili is another tradition here, as is chili mac, also available in styles much like its Cincinnati cousins. You can get all-beef hot dogs and sandwiches, too, and sides aren't limited to fries. The hand-dipped shakes are decadence at its best, but if you're counting calories know the fruit smoothies will please you just fine. At the same time, we'd advise saving space for the hot fudge sundae.
