Monarch Restaurant Description:
Monarch's impressive cuisine, cocktails and wine list may tempt one to classify it among those rarefied special-occasion restaurants. Don't make the mistake. It's accessible enough for a weekday meal, especially in the café and bar, where the menu contains quite a few items for under $10. That's very reasonably priced, considering the quality of executive chef Josh Galliano's cooking. The dining room is more formal, with celadon walls, wisps of fabric hanging from the ceiling and a glass-walled wine cellar. Galliano is big on local produce, so it stands to reason that the menu is quite vegetarian-friendly. But, then again, meat-lovers will go for the house-made charcuterie; and short ribs, in one form or another, are always on the menu. Preparations may veer toward culinary pageantry, as in star anise-poached Gulf shrimp with a cantaloupe-lime foam and honeydew ribbons or tomato salad embellished with grilled watermelon and tomato sorbet. The wine and cocktail lists are, as one would expect, first-rate.
