Sacramento certainly has its share of Japanese restaurants, but not until now have any of them focused on the art of the Japanese grill. Sure, most sushi places have grilled steak and chicken, but they are usually doused in a syrupy-sweet glaze and served in a bento box. Sapporo, however, competes with the best American-style steakhouses with its top-quality grilled meats and seafood. The Prime New York was seared to crispy, yet tender and juicy inside, served with mashed potatoes infused with a hint of citrusy yuzu. For a truly authentic taste of Japan, splurge on the Kobe steak, imported from Japan and certified authentic, at $65 for six ounces. Sushi, tempura and other traditional options are available, as are a number of Japanese-inspired desserts, such as tempura ice cream and green tea cheesecake. Unlike many Japanese restaurants focusing on traditional décor, the design at Sapporo is more modern, with a few expected elements thrown in for good measure. Amber lights, flat-screen TVs and black upholstered chairs are offset by natural wood and paper lanterns, while the interior is anchored by a large center bar, creating a hip, urban vibe.
