Relish Description:
Relish, by Fickle Pickle owner Andy Badgett, seeks mainstream footing. Some dishes succeed whereas others need to be reconfigured. Among the latter are the cheese straws, dry and tasteless and quite disappointing given how good these Southern nibbles can be. The spiced pecans, on the other hand, are very worthy, and we'll be back for more of the fried oysters with the green tomato tartar sauce. The smoked trout salad is a good dish to target, as well. We had a hard time understanding the overwrought fried green tomatoes with tomato jam, molasses vinaigrette and mozzarella cheese. Fried green tomatoes don't need to get that gussied up. While the succotash on the grouper was fine, the fish itself was just slightly fishy, a condition not obscured by the tasty roasted corn sauce. Re-sampled later at lunch, the fish was fine in a sandwich. We can also recommend the hanger steak. And as for the Krispy Kreme bread pudding? Oh, now, we're on to something. Based on the famous donuts, it's a winner. In sum, don't expect the subtle and nuanced dishes that attended Badgett's Asher. That's not what Relish is about. But with care, one can compose a respectable meal.
