The urban pirate culture is alive and well in Portland, and this family-friendly place is a testament to those mateys, as well as anyone who likes Latin-American grub. There's always a happy buzz here because everyone's having a great, pirate-y time. The décor is roadside tropical, the margaritas flow, and a Latin beat pulsates through the air. You can get informal dinners of Cuban sandwiches, or slightly more elaborate offerings, such as Southern-style tamales wrapped in banana leaves, jerk pork and jerk ribs, or spicy jambalayas. For sunshine-starved Portlanders, all this color and tropical food is just the thing for winter days, and cheaper than a ticket to the Bahamas. For extra fun and a good cause, the annual Great Balls of Fire competition here pits heat-eaters against each other for charity.
