There's nothing like mom's cooking. This charming restaurant, the mother lode of comfort food, serves the classic hearty dishes mom and grandma used to make. Lisa Schroeder, a mother as well as chef and owner, takes one look at fashionably skinny diners and demands that they eat, eat, eat. Dishes range from chopped liver to grandma's kitchen-style chicken and dumplings. The ambitious entrée specials celebrate local ingredients as well as Schroeder's training at the Culinary Institute of America. But though she may be adventurous, Schroeder remains true to the spirit of comfort food with her ever-changing macaroni and cheese recipes and whimsical Mother-of-the-Month menu, which features down-to-earth dishes from moms in different cultures. The baked goods are a special treat, from flaky biscuits to a coconut cream pie. The dining room is sometimes too loud (just like home) and not very private (also, just like home), but these annoyances are minor. Just shut up and eat already. Or sneak off to the cozy Velvet Lounge for a grown-up cocktail.
